11 Just Plain Hate

We leave the doctors to continue their work. Based on the discoveries they’ve made here, their contributions to the game should be historic, although it’s frustrating that it takes so long for our work to make an impact on earth. However, working with Red to revitalize the training camp and be a part of what we’ve already accomplished has been tremendous.

“I feel like I’m getting a second chance here,” I say to Red.

“What do you mean?” he asks.

“After I couldn’t play football anymore, I really struggled to find a new direction in life. I loved the game so much and poured everything I had into it. When that dream was taken away, it was crushing—I felt cheated. I became a diehard fan and soaked up everything I could about the game, but it was a far cry from being able to play. I searched for a long time but was never able to find anything else that I really cared about—something that gave me a real purpose. I was lost—just going through the motions.

“But now, meeting you, getting the camp going and the things we’re doing has been great. We’re giving back to the game and we’ll be making a real difference. I haven’t been this excited about anything since I was playing. It feels like I’m being given another opportunity to make up for what I lost on earth.”

“You deserve it,” says Red. “You had some tough breaks in your life: losing your father to suicide, losing football and losing your life as a young man. It’s difficult to understand how you ended up in purgatory. You’d think you would have gone straight to heaven after what you’ve been through. Whatever the reason, I’m glad you’re here. I definitely needed help getting the camp off the ground and it’s been pretty lonely haunting college football all these years by myself. It’s just been me and Belvedere and he’s not much of a football guy. It’s terrific to have a pal around who loves it as much as I do.

“Speaking of Belvedere,” he says, “we’ve been so wrapped up here, I feel like we’ve abandoned our old friend back at the Grotto. We should go check in and see how he’s getting along. I know he feels a little neglected if we’re gone too long. Also, it’s rivalry week in college football. I always make it a point to get down to earth and check out one of the big games. Are you with me?”

“That sounds great,” I say. “I could use a little break.”

Snap!

The Grotto is dark and cold when we arrive.

“This is strange,” says Red. “Belvedere always has the fire going and the lights on. Oh Belvedere!” he calls out.

We stand in the darkness for a moment waiting to see our old friend, but there’s no response. Red snaps his fingers and the Grotto comes back to life. The fireplace crackles with a burst of flames and the oil lamps around the cave flicker on.
