11 Just Plain Hate
We leave the doctors to continue their work. Based on the discoveries theyâve made here, their contributions to the game should be historic, although itâs frustrating that it takes so long for our work to make an impact on earth. However, working with Red to revitalize the training camp and be a part of what weâve already accomplished has been tremendous.
âI feel like Iâm getting a second chance here,â I say to Red.
âWhat do you mean?â he asks.
âAfter I couldnât play football anymore, I really struggled to find a new direction in life. I loved the game so much and poured everything I had into it. When that dream was taken away, it was crushingâI felt cheated. I became a diehard fan and soaked up everything I could about the game, but it was a far cry from being able to play. I searched for a long time but was never able to find anything else that I really cared aboutâsomething that gave me a real purpose. I was lostâjust going through the motions.
âBut now, meeting you, getting the camp going and the things weâre doing has been great. Weâre giving back to the game and weâll be making a real difference. I havenât been this excited about anything since I was playing. It feels like Iâm being given another opportunity to make up for what I lost on earth.â
âYou deserve it,â says Red. âYou had some tough breaks in your life: losing your father to suicide, losing football and losing your life as a young man. Itâs difficult to understand how you ended up in purgatory. Youâd think you would have gone straight to heaven after what youâve been through. Whatever the reason, Iâm glad youâre here. I definitely needed help getting the camp off the ground and itâs been pretty lonely haunting college football all these years by myself. Itâs just been me and Belvedere and heâs not much of a football guy. Itâs terrific to have a pal around who loves it as much as I do.
âSpeaking of Belvedere,â he says, âweâve been so wrapped up here, I feel like weâve abandoned our old friend back at the Grotto. We should go check in and see how heâs getting along. I know he feels a little neglected if weâre gone too long. Also, itâs rivalry week in college football. I always make it a point to get down to earth and check out one of the big games. Are you with me?â
âThat sounds great,â I say. âI could use a little break.â
Snap!

The Grotto is dark and cold when we arrive.
âThis is strange,â says Red. âBelvedere always has the fire going and the lights on. Oh Belvedere!â he calls out.
We stand in the darkness for a moment waiting to see our old friend, but thereâs no response. Red snaps his fingers and the Grotto comes back to life. The fireplace crackles with a burst of flames and the oil lamps around the cave flicker on.
